Nadworny ogrodnik André Le Nôtre (Matthias Schoenaerts) ku powszechnemu oburzeniu męskich konkurentów angażuje do pracy młodą wdowę i pasjonatkę ogrodnictwa.

Could there be a more romantic setting than the gardens of Versailles, scented with roses and sweet pears? That may be the ideal recipe for love à la française, but what happens when you add… a little chaos? As director, Alan Rickman steers clear of lyrical grandiosity. Instead of courtly passion, he favours restraint and emotional subtlety, a fitting approach to an age caught between rigid convention and the desire for something more genuine.

France, in the second half of the 17th century. Garden designers are competing to create the perfect grounds for Louis XIV’s Versailles. To the outrage of his male rivals, royal gardener André Le Nôtre (Matthias Schoenaerts) hires a young widow with a passion for horticulture. Sabine De Barra (Kate Winslet) is carrying deep emotional scars and finds temporary solace in nature. When the royal court arrives, Sabine, unfamiliar with its etiquette and intrigues, is forced to navigate an entirely new world. She faces male dominance, political manoeuvring and her own unresolved trauma, all complicated by her growing feelings for Le Nôtre.

Critics were divided over the film’s pacing and emotional restraint, but its portrait of the period deserves attention. Beneath the elaborate frills, powder and towering wigs lies a sharp social contrast between two worlds: the elegant schemers of the court and the ordinary people living in modest, mist-shrouded homes, whose labour sustains the whims of those in power at the expense of their own private lives. Peter Gregson’s intense score runs through it all, giving voice to the clash between emotion and self-interest that the film’s accomplished cast keep carefully beneath the surface.

The film’s thread of female independence in an age that offered women little freedom owes much to Alison Deegan, who wrote her own version of Madame de Barra’s story many years before the film was made. Conceived during maternity leave and fears of a career crisis in a toxic environment, the story attracted interest only seventeen years later. It eventually became a screenplay written by Deegan, Rickman and Jeremy Brock.

A LITTLE CHAOS is one of only two films directed by Alan Rickman during his nearly five-decade screen career, the other being THE WINTER GUEST (1997). In 2014, the much-loved British actor brought his period comedy-drama to Polish audiences at the Camerimage festival, where he personally received the Krzysztof Kieślowski Award.

Minna (Galaxie Clear) i Flic (Marni Duggan) uczęszczają do prestiżowej angielskiej szkoły z internatem.

Minna (Galaxie Clear) and Flic (Marni Duggan) attend a prestigious English boarding school. They are good at pretty much everything: the humanities, the sciences and – rather less predictably – sport, in their case lacrosse. Despite their young age, they treat life as something to be meticulously planned and managed. Their ambitions for the future are sky-high. The two are so close they are almost joined at the hip, having achieved a kind of symbiosis their classmates – and plenty of other people – might envy.

The one thing they know next to nothing about is love. The subject comes into focus with the approaching premiere of a Shakespeare play in which they are both due to perform. The girls decide they ought to fall in love, but, true to form, they leave nothing to chance. Instinct and emotion take a back seat to analysis. Determined to get to grips with the subject, they pore over literary romances and study the behaviour of people who are, or have been, in love. They even come up with a method for choosing the object of their affections.

That is how Miss Delavigne (Alice Englert), a teacher in her thirties, catches their attention, entirely unaware that she has become the subject of her pupils’ experiment. The situation soon begins to test Minna and Flic’s friendship.

Based on the prose of Rose Tremain and directed by Molly Manners in her feature debut, EXTRA GEOGRAPHY (2026) is an original, darkly funny coming-of-age film that pits the girls’ cool, academic way of thinking against the chaos of desire and jealousy. Reality clashes with expectations, and it becomes clear that maturing is more than just checking off a box. It is a bitter lesson – and quite possibly the hardest one Minna and Flic will ever have to learn.

Nagrodzony w 2020 roku prestiżową brytyjską nagrodą Women’s Prize for Fiction tekst, został zainspirowany najsłynniejszą, a jednocześnie najbardziej enigmatyczną sztuką Williama Szekspira.
W latach 80.

Maggie O’Farrell’s novel describes a boy who “tends to slip the bounds of the real, tangible world around him”. Winner of the Women’s Prize for Fiction in 2020, the book was inspired by William Shakespeare’s most famous and most enigmatic play.
In the 1580s, a couple living in Stratford had three children: Susanna, followed by twins Hamnet and Judith. Hamnet died at the age of eleven. Four years later, his father wrote a play entitled Hamlet. Directed by Chloé Zhao, the second woman in history to win the Academy Award for Best Director (NOMADLAND, 2021), HAMNET is a tender and deeply affecting portrait of a marriage trying to reshape itself after the death of a beloved child. At its heart is Agnes, William Shakespeare’s wife, and her struggle to live with the loss of their son.

The film is led by a remarkable pair of Irish actors, Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal. Steven Spielberg and Sam Mendes are among the producers, Łukasz Żal is responsible for the cinematography, and the score was composed by Max Richter. HAMNET is a story about searching for closeness and meaning after a loss whose wounds can never fully heal. Hovering somewhere between dream and reality, it sets out, to borrow the language of the film itself, to tell a story that moves us.

Zhao’s film received eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, while Jessie Buckley won the Oscar for her performance. HAMNET received its first Polish screenings at the British Film Festival in 2025.

Danny Boyle, 2008) i MIASTO BOGA (reż. A wszystko to zamknięte w ramach kina spod znaku kryminału, thrillera i przygodówki.

If you have ever wondered what you might get if you crossed Danny Boyle’s SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE (2008) with Fernando Meirelles’s CITY OF GOD (2002), then handed the screenplay to Richard Curtis – the man behind romantic comedies such as LOVE ACTUALLY (2003) – Stephen Daldry has the answer. His TRASH (2014) has a title that works on more than one level, referring not only to discarded objects but also to people cast aside by society. Told from the perspective of young people, the film tackles distinctly adult concerns, with endemic corruption chief among them, all within a blend of crime drama, thriller and adventure.

On a vast rubbish dump on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, fourteen-year-old Raphael (Rickson Tevez), one of society’s outcasts, makes a living sifting through mountains of waste. One day, he finds a wallet containing a few banknotes, some documents and photographs, a key to a locker at a railway station and a string of numbers that turns out to be part of a much larger puzzle. When the police come looking for the missing wallet – and make it clear they are not above using violence – Raphael realises he has stumbled onto something serious.

Together with his best friends Gardo (Eduardo Luís) and Rato (Gabriel Weinstein), he sets off through Rio’s favelas to find out what is really going on. Along the way, they get help from a local priest (Martin Sheen) and a volunteer (Rooney Mara). Drawing on its mix of genres, Daldry tells a story about inequality and violence while creating a vividly coloured, dirt-streaked and relentlessly kinetic fable whose metaphors remain simple and easy to read.

Wytyka opresyjność porządkowi konstytuowanemu przez Kościół Anglikański i skrada ludzkie serca utopijną wizją równości płciowej i społecznej, której życzyłby sobie Chrystus.
Fastvold zaangażowała do produkcji TESTAMENTU ANN LEE nieprawdopodobnie utalentowanych ludzi, którzy tchnęli w jej historię autentyczność i transcendentność.

[ENG]

Female religious leaders have been vanishingly rare throughout history. So when director and screenwriter Mona Fastvold, co-writer of the Oscar-nominated THE BRUTALIST, came across the figure of Ann Lee, she felt almost compelled to bring her story to the screen. All the more so because the legacy of this woman, driven by an extraordinary ambition to reshape the New World, had largely been buried and left to survive in fragments, speculation and myth. Fastvold approaches that history with respect, resisting the temptation to force it into a contemporary framework. The result is a hypnotic, ecstatic cinematic experience, full of bold visual invention and musical interludes that may win over even those normally wary of the genre.
Ann Lee (Amanda Seyfried) is a woman from Manchester who founds the Shaker movement in response to the corruption and injustice she sees around her. She challenges the oppressive social order upheld by the Church of England and wins people over with a utopian vision of gender and social equality, one she believes Christ himself would have wanted. Ann and her community eventually cross the Atlantic to New England, hoping to build a new society founded on empathy.
For THE TESTAMENT OF ANN LEE, Fastvold surrounded herself with an extraordinary group of collaborators who give the film both authenticity and a sense of transcendence. Amanda Seyfried takes on what may be the most demanding role of her career, delivering not only a remarkable emotional performance but also striking vocal and physical work. Song, movement and ecstatic worship are central to Shaker practice, and choreographer Celia Rowlson-Hall captures the expressive force of their dance. Meanwhile, composer Daniel Blumberg reworks traditional Shaker melodies with thrilling contemporary energy.
William Rexer’s camera moves enhance physical intensity. It literally draws the audience into euphoric community and lets us experience, from within, its unconventional understanding of faith and the world. With collaborators like these, Fastvold creates something close to a total work of cinema, charged throughout with an almost overwhelming creative force.

Lynne Ramsay, gościni i bohaterka retrospektywy reżyserskiej podczas British Film Festival 2024, powróciła w zeszłym roku z dziełem totalnym.

[ENG]

Lynne Ramsay, a guest of honour and the subject of a director’s retrospective at the 2024 British Film Festival, returned last year with one of her most uncompromising films yet. DIE, MY LOVE is further proof of her extraordinary visual instinct and rare sensitivity to the darker states of mind.

Ramsay takes us to remote Montana, where Grace and Jackson (Golden Globe nominee Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson, who is taking the cinema world by storm this year) decide to fulfil their dream of escaping the hustle and bustle of city life. However, their idyll in a wooden house in the middle of nowhere soon reveals its dark underbelly. With surgical precision, Ramsay shows how the idyllic façade is cracking under the weight of isolation and new responsibilities following the birth of their child. At this point, a mesmerising study of psychological breakdown begins.

Jennifer Lawrence dominates the screen as Grace, delivering an outstanding performance – perhaps the most significant of her career to date. Her portrayal of a woman plunging into the depths of postnatal depression, trapped between a lost sense of self and her (un)wanted role as a mother, is mesmerising and captivating. Ramsay guides her actress through the darkest recesses of emotion, crafting a story that is both brutally honest and poetically beautiful.

DIE, MY LOVE is emotionally raw, visually arresting and another reminder of Ramsay’s place among the most uncompromising voices in contemporary cinema.

Jest rok 1810. Nieopodal Edynburga, dwie nauczycielki Jane Pirie (Flora Nicholson) i Marianne Woods (Clare Dunne) otwierają w domu kameralną szkołę dla młodych dziewcząt. Jane pozostaje outsiderką wśród pozostałych uczennic, a jej pochodzenie i historia stają się pretekstem do ciągłych konfliktów w grupie i prześladowań. Scenariusz filmu został oparty na podstawie książki Lillian Faderman Scotch Verdict: The Real-Life Story That Inspired “The Children’s Hour”, która nawiązuje do prawdziwych wydarzeń, mających miejsce w XIX-wiecznej Szkocji.

[ENG]
It is 1810. Near Edinburgh, two teachers, Jane Pirie (Flora Nicholson) and Marianne Woods (Clare Dunne), open a small school for young girls in their home. Both long for independence and, in a world governed by rigid conventions and clearly prescribed roles for women, try to build a life on their own terms. One day, a wealthy grandmother (Fiona Shaw) arrives in Drumsheugh with three of her granddaughters, whom she intends to enrol at the school.
Among them is fifteen-year-old Jane Cumming, a girl of Indian and Scottish heritage born out of wedlock, treated by her aristocratic family as a necessary evil. Jane remains an outsider among the other pupils, and her background and personal history become a constant source of conflict and bullying. Rejected by her peers, she grows increasingly close to her teachers – a relationship she will later turn against them, the most painful blow.
As tensions mount and Jane’s expectations go unmet, the teenager spreads a rumour and accuses her carers of a lie that cannot be taken back. She accuses them of having an affair. The accusation quickly gains traction and sparks a public scandal. That escalates into a protracted legal battle in which Jane and Marianne must fight not only for their reputations, but for their livelihoods, independence and the lives they have built for themselves.
Directed by Sophie Heldman, this period drama exposes some of the darkest rules governing the era, when prejudice rooted in racism, class divisions and sexuality could readily be turned into a weapon. It also quietly reflects on the cruelty of the colonial age, which left many children born of mixed heritage to suffer simply because their skin was not white and their parentage crossed racial boundaries.
The screenplay is based on Lillian Faderman’s Scotch Verdict: The Real-Life Story That Inspired “The Children’s Hour”, which draws on events that took place in 19th-century Scotland. Deeply affecting, THE EDUCATION OF JANE CUMMING returns to an enduring truth: a rumour can destroy dreams and even the deepest feelings people have for one another. What was said cannot be taken back.

SZLACHECTWO ZOBOWIĄZUJE to jeden z najbardziej cenionych klejnotów brytyjskiego kina: film elegancki, przewrotnie zabawny i po ponad siedemdziesięciu pięciu latach wciąż zaskakująco świeży. Produkcja z 1949 roku należy do serii niezwykle popularnych powojennych komedii studia Ealing.

KIND HEARTS AND CORONETS is a much-loved gem of British cinema: elegant, wickedly funny, and still incredibly fresh more than seventy-five years after its release. One in a series of hugely successful comedies made by Ealing Studios after the war, this 1949 production follows Louis Mazzini, a charming but ruthless outsider determined to seek revenge on the aristocratic family who disinherited him and his mother. He plots to remove the eight relatives that stand between him and the dukedom, an outrageous, immoral and irresistibly entertaining solution. What makes the film essential viewing is not just its deliciously macabre plot, but the brilliance with which it is told. Dennis Price gives Louis a silky, sardonic intelligence, while Alec Guinness delivers a legendary comic performance as multiple members of the D’Ascoyne family, playing everything from vicars to suffragettes. The film’s humour is unmistakably British, much of it in the presentation of Louis as outwardly charming and refined, but secretly a serial killer. It exposes the snobbery and hypocrisy of the upper classes without ever losing its lightness of touch.

Loosely based on an Edwardian novel, the film’s recreation of the period is exceptional, both in its manners and its costumes and décor. Ealing Studio aimed to make British films that promoted the national character but which would appeal to international audiences and they achieved this with the Ealing comedies, Kind Hearts and Coronets being widely regarded as the high point of the series.

W wytwornej restauracji Le Hollandais co wieczór zasiada gangster – Albert Spica. Prostacki, chciwy i okrutny, terroryzuje gości, personel i własną żonę – Georginę.

[ENG]

Every evening, gangster Albert Spica takes his place at a table in the elegant Le Hollandais restaurant. Vulgar, greedy and cruel, he terrorises the diners, the staff and his own wife, Georgina. She, however, finds an escape in a bookish, romantic lover, conducting their affair under her husband’s nose – in the kitchen, the pantry and the toilets – with the discreet help of Richard, the cook. When Albert discovers the betrayal, the story tips into a bloody revenge tragedy in which no one remains innocent, and the final course is hard to forget.

Greenaway stages the film’s plot in the style of a play. Menu cards divide the action into acts; the camera glides parallel to the set, whilst the characters often line up on one side of the table, as if bowing to the audience. Each space has its own colour: the car park is blue, the kitchen green, the dining room red and the toilets white. Georgina’s clothes change colour with each new setting. A Frans Hals painting hangs on the wall. At the same time, the tables groan under still lifes of fish, seafood and meat, calling to mind the old vanitas refrain: vanity of vanities.

Around the tables of Le Hollandais sits an entire vision of Thatcher’s Britain. The Thief embodies the arrogance and contempt of those in power; the Cook is the ordinary citizen, carrying out orders while muttering under his breath; the Lover is the intellectual and rebel; and the Wife, a dignified country bound to its abuser.

A classic that demands to be seen on the big screen – though perhaps not just before dinner.

[ENG]
The film’s original title is the name of the fictional Caribbean island on which the story takes place, colonised by the Portuguese. The name translates as ‘burnt’ – a reference to the way the colonisers razed local villages and disposed of their inhabitants to bring in enslaved people and begin exploiting the island through plantation agriculture. In the mid-19th century, William Walker arrives on the island as an agent hired by the British Crown. His task is to radicalise the enslaved population and foment an uprising – a move designed to oust the Portuguese and enable the plantations to be taken over.
This epic film by Gillo Pontecorvo, the Italian director regarded as one of the foremost figures in politically engaged cinema, is at once a period drama, an action film, and an incisive treatise on colonialism. The mechanisms of subjugation, manipulation, and exploitation are laid bare with striking clarity and directness, and their relevance to the present day is hard to miss. Although BURN! is not a historical film and its story is fictional, it can be seen as a faithful reflection of the reality it depicts. At the time of its release, it was also regarded as a powerful commentary on the ongoing war in Vietnam.
Marlon Brando’s involvement in this film project subtly enhances the film’s impact. His character appears to be both a cynic and an idealist; he is thoroughly contemporary, complicating the film’s meanings and pushing it beyond the boundaries of the adventure genre. The discriminatory behaviour towards actors that he revealed added further controversy, placing BURN! within the very discourse that the film itself condemned.

Spełnienie filmowi przynosi szczególnie subtelna, dojrzała rola Gillian Anderson w roli głównej i wyjątkowa chemia, jaka łączy ją z towarzyszącym na ekranie Jasonem Isaacsem.

Some stories are so extraordinary they feel as though they were made for the screen. Raynor Winn’s memoir THE SALT PATH, which became an international bestseller and publishing phenomenon, is one of them.
The film marks the feature debut of Marianne Elliott, best known for her acclaimed theatre work, while the screenplay is by Rebecca Lenkiewicz, co-writer of the Oscar-winning IDA and screenwriter of HOT MILK, shown in the High Season section of the festival’s second edition.
Elliott tells with great tenderness the story of a married couple whose lives collapse almost overnight. They lose their home and any sense of security, only to learn that the husband is also facing an incurable illness. With nowhere else to turn, they make a drastic decision: to walk the South West Coast Path, a route stretching for more than a thousand kilometres along the coast of south-west England.
Running through the wild, breathtaking landscapes of Cornwall and Devon, the trail becomes more than a test of endurance. It offers the couple a way to keep moving when everything else has fallen apart. THE SALT PATH is road cinema in its purest form, with nature as a constant presence and each step carrying them towards a fragile sense of hope.
At the heart of the film is Gillian Anderson’s restrained, deeply felt performance, matched by the easy, convincing chemistry she shares with Jason Isaacs.

Trzy kobiety, trzy miasta, trzy różne epoki. Richmond pod Londynem, rok 1923. Virginia Woolf (nagrodzona Oscarem za tę rolę Nicole Kidman, przez złośliwych wyszydzana za charakterystyczną protezę nosa) rozpoczyna prace nad kolejną powieścią, a mianowicie „Panią Dalloway”. Jednocześnie zmaga się z załamaniem nerwowym, apatią i poczuciem uwięzienia. Suburbia Los Angeles, rok 1951.

Three women, three cities, three different eras. Richmond, near London, 1923. Virginia Woolf (Nicole Kidman, who won an Oscar for the role and was unkindly mocked by some for her distinctive prosthetic nose) begins work on her next novel, Mrs Dalloway. At the same time, she is struggling with a nervous breakdown, apathy and a profound sense of confinement.

Suburban Los Angeles, 1951. Laura Brown (Julianne Moore), a pregnant housewife, looks after her husband and son and tends to the family home. At the same time, she is struggling with a nervous breakdown, apathy and a profound sense of confinement.New York, at the beginning of the 21st century. Clarissa Vaughan (Meryl Streep) is organising a party in honour of a poet dying of AIDS, who was once her lover. At the same time, she is struggling with a nervous breakdown, apathy and a profound sense of confinement. Although Virginia, Laura and Clarissa are separated by decades, they share a common experience: the realisation that everyday life, however perfect it may appear from the outside, can become a source of profound anguish.

In adapting Michael Cunningham’s supposedly unfilmable, Pulitzer Prize-winning 1998 novel, Stephen Daldry created a moving triptych about the price of living according to other people’s expectations, and the longing to choose a different path, if only once.

Nominated for nine Academy Awards and warmly received by both audiences – as reflected in its box-office success – and critics, THE HOURS (2002) explores the pressures experienced by women regardless of the time and circumstances in which they live. In 2025, the film was selected for inclusion in the National Film Registry, a collection of works recognised as part of the cultural heritage of the United States.

Helen nieoczekiwanie traci ojca (Brendan Gleeson) – cenionego fotografa prasowego i człowieka zakochanego w cudach świata.

Remember the magnificent hawk keeping watch beside Jessie Buckley in HAMNET? A bird of prey once again takes centre stage in a story about grief, but this time it becomes far more than a striking presence. Philippa Lowthorpe’s H IS FOR HAWK, based on the memoir by naturalist Helen Macdonald, is a surprisingly comforting and deeply spiritual story of loss, solitude and an extraordinary bond with the wild. Claire Foy, beloved for THE CROWN, stars as Helen.

After the sudden death of her father (Brendan Gleeson), a respected photojournalist with an infectious sense of wonder about the world, Helen begins to lose her footing. Her work feels increasingly meaningless; she withdraws from her family and loneliness closes in. Everything changes when she takes on a magnificent goshawk and names her Mabel – from the Latin for “lovable”. Helen throws herself into training the bird, and an intense bond begins to form between them. She comes to see Mabel as both refuge and guide, hoping that life alongside this fierce, untamed creature might ease her grief and teach her how to inhabit the world again. But as Helen retreats further into Mabel’s world, a troubling question emerges: is she finding her way back to life, or disappearing into the wild?

Lowthorpe turns Helen’s memories into an intimate journey through mourning, anchored by Foy’s finely judged performance, in which barely contained sadness sits alongside an almost childlike awe at the natural world. The sequences of Mabel in flight and on the hunt have the arresting beauty of the finest wildlife filmmaking, while the hawk itself becomes a way of escaping a reality Helen can no longer bear – recalling the British tradition of KES.

H IS FOR HAWK is ultimately a deeply affecting story about a person paralysed by grief learning, slowly and painfully, to take flight again.

Drogę do wciąż aktualnej problematyki społecznej wyznacza w nich kontekst historyczny, queerowa wrażliwość i psychologia postaci. Z pomocą australijskiej scenarzystki Diany Reid twórczynie przepuszczają przez realistyczny filtr ponadczasowe emocje i perypetie sióstr Dashwood poszukujących własnego miejsca w świecie.

[ENG]

A fresh take on Jane Austen’s classic novel, first published in 1811 under the pseudonym “A Lady”, which surprised readers with a tone more ironic than romantic, a sharp wit and a clear-eyed portrait of its age. The makers of the new SENSE AND SENSIBILITY not only follow in the footsteps of the ever-beloved author, but also loosen the stays of social convention to bring female emancipation and the strength of sisterhood to the fore. At the same time, they delve into the intricacies of the Georgian mindset, exploring a conflict between feeling and reason that does not always resolve itself into the reassuring shape of a happy ending.

After Mr Dashwood’s death, his second wife and three daughters are forced to leave the family estate. Under the inheritance laws of the time, his property passed to a male heir – in this case, his son from his first marriage. The Dashwood sisters are left dependent on the goodwill of relatives and acutely aware that marriage remains the only socially acceptable route to security. The two eldest, the sensible Elinor (Daisy Edgar-Jones, acclaimed for her performance in WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING) and the more impulsive Marianne (Esmé Creed-Miles, known from HANNA and THE SANDMAN), must navigate both the expectations of a society in thrall to etiquette and the complications of their own hearts.

Director Georgia Oakley (LITTLE BIRD, BLUE JEAN) once again displays a striking command of style, rooted in the visual language of European cinema – from French intimacy to the acute observation of human behaviour associated with Spanish film. A certain sensuality runs through the work of the BAFTA-nominated British filmmaker, yet there is little room for formula or prettification. Historical context, queer sensitivity and close attention to character psychology become her routes into social questions that remain strikingly relevant. Working with Australian screenwriter Diana Reid, Oakley refracts the timeless emotions and romantic entanglements of the Dashwood sisters through a realist lens as they search for a place of their own in the world.

Parafrazując Rihannę, Colina zaczynają podniecać skóry i łańcuchy i z przyjemnością zajmuje tylne siedzenie zarezerwowane dla uległego w szalonej fetyszystycznej przejażdżce z facetem marzeń.

[ENG]

Harry Lighton, a first-time filmmaker from Hampshire, made a striking Cannes debut with PILLION, an uncompromising exploration of queer BDSM culture. The film sits closer to Peter Strickland’s THE DUKE OF BURGUNDY or Halina Reijn’s BABYGIRL than to the glossy fantasy of FIFTY SHADES OF GREY – and benefits from that distinction. In adapting Adam Mars-Jones’s novel, Lighton moves through taboo territory with remarkable ease, while asking sharper questions about desire, boundaries and the difficulty of communicating both.
Unlike the novel, PILLION unfolds in the present day, in the quiet suburban setting of Bromley. Colin (Harry Melling) is drifting through life without much excitement, closely supported by his parents. His routine is abruptly disrupted by Ray (Alexander Skarsgård), a mysterious biker who draws him out of his comfort zone and into a world of sexual freedom. Leather, chains and submission become part of a relationship that initially seems to offer Colin both escape and fulfilment.
Lighton’s ambitions reach far beyond provocation. The film is sensual, funny and often sharply observed, but its real strength lies in its candid, non-judgemental depiction of a young gay man learning how to navigate desire, intimacy and power. The gay biker community is portrayed with similar care: members of the scene advised Lighton during development and also appear as non-professional performers, giving the film an added sense of authenticity.
The result is one of the more distinctive British debuts of recent years: playful, provocative and unusually assured. Its screenplay was awarded in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes.

Nie inaczej jest w THE FALL OF SIR DOUGLAS WEATHERFORD, melancholijnej satyrze debiutującego reżysera Seána Dunna.

[ENG]
HARRY POTTER, OUTLANDER and Marvel productions have all made liberal use of the Scottish landscape as a backdrop for large-scale storytelling. In doing so, they have brought waves of fans to local communities, along with substantial profits – but also the commercialisation of other people’s lived reality. The same tension runs through THE FALL OF SIR DOUGLAS WEATHERFORD, a melancholic satire from first-time director Seán Dunn. Deeply attuned to the national character, the Scottish filmmaker skewers the absurdities of obsessive fandom while taking a critical view of an expansive film industry more interested in manufacturing reality than engaging with the real world.

Dunn does not lose sight of the film’s more intimate dimension: the portrait of Kenneth (Peter Mullan, known for TRAINSPOTTING and MY NAME IS JOE), an ageing loner unable to find his place in the world of late capitalism. Kenneth works as a tour guide in a small town and is obsessed with Sir Douglas Weatherford, his supposed ancestor. When a fantasy film crew descends on his home town, even the local community begins to lose interest in its own heritage. Kenneth decides to take matters into his own hands and remind his fellow townspeople of their history.

In Dunn’s hands, Kenneth has the air of a local eccentric, but the character never tips into caricature. On the one hand, the director gently mocks his snobbery and draws a parallel between the idealisation of celebrities and historical figures; on the other, he remains sympathetic to a grieving man clinging to the past and, in the process, drifting away from his family. Dunn is unafraid to experiment with genre and places considerable trust in Mullan - a choice that pays off in a remarkable performance.

A historical epic based on real events, THE UPRISING asks what freedom is worth in an age of feudal oppression. Fourteenth-century England has been ravaged by plague, repression and mounting social unrest. When word spreads of the ruling elite’s ruthless plans and a tax that falls hardest on the poorest, peasants already pushed to the breaking point decide to resist the tyranny of Richard II. What begins with a handful of rebels, led by a charismatic young insurgent (Andrew Garfield), soon swells into a wave of anger sweeping across the country. The oppressed are ready to wage war on the Crown.

In 1381, rebels from Essex and Kent, led by Wat Tyler and rallied by the preacher John Ball, rose against exploitation and a poll tax levied regardless of income. Few could have foreseen that the revolt would culminate in a march on London.

The bloody riots were brought to an end by an equally brutal crackdown by the king’s forces. But the myth of freedom and the struggle for justice took firm root in the minds of the English peasants, leading to the birth of the legend of Robin Hood.

BAFTA-winning director Paul Greengrass, who received an Academy Award nomination for UNITED 93 (2006), approaches this story of rage and rebellion with his characteristic journalistic immediacy, while fully embracing its brutality, intensity and restless camerawork. The jittery, urgent images capture the emotional force behind an uprising that marked a turning point in medieval English history and, centuries later, would continue to inspire the political left.

How far can you go in trying to reform someone violent and difficult? Can care and affection ever justify brutality as a method of discipline? Do the ends justify the means? These are the questions posed by Poznań-born director Jan Komasa (SUICIDE ROOM, CORPUS CHRISTI), and they seem to lie at the heart of his work, as his second international production once again makes clear.

The title character, Tommy, is played by Anson Boon, the young British actor who terrorises London as Eddie Harrigan in the series MOBLAND and seems almost designed to invite trouble. Unsympathetic characters may well be his forte: in Komasa’s film, Tommy is just as brutal, cocky and intoxicated by the power he holds over those around him. But the good times end abruptly when, after a heavy night out, he is abducted by the mysterious Chris (Stephen Graham). Tommy wakes up locked in the basement of an outwardly mild-mannered family who, with all their talk of “love”, are perfectly prepared to beat him into submission, convinced that force and violence can straighten out a damaged member of society.

Komasa offers his own answer to A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, with a streak of bleak humour that would not feel out of place in a Lanthimos film. In Bartek Bartosik’s debut screenplay, he finds a productive tension between rawness and absurdity, violence and vulnerability, giving him plenty of room to play with genre. The cast are completely at home in these contradictions, particularly Stephen Graham, whose genial, fatherly face makes his sudden shifts into stern disciplinarian all the more chilling.

Komasa’s cinema remains confrontational, drawn to uncomfortable grey areas where the boundaries within the family as a system become dangerously thin. A distinctive Polish-British co-production.

Jest czerwiec 1816 roku. W wynajętej willi zamknięci przez pogodę Lord Byron, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Mary Godwin, Claire Clairmont i doktor John Polidori rzucili sobie wyzwanie: każde z nich miało napisać opowieść o duchach. Dzięki jednej nocy powstały FRANKENSTEIN i WAMPIR – dwa teksty, na których stoi całe nowoczesne kino grozy. GOTYK Kena Russella opowiada właśnie o niej.
Gdy wreszcie dostał dwa miliony funtów budżetu, nakręcił film w posiadłości w Hertfordshire udającej szwajcarską willę i puścił wodze fantazji: ze scenariusza Stephena Volka wyciął prolog i epilog i dorzucił mechanicznego manekina. A do współpracy zaprosił Gabriela Byrne’a, Juliana Sandsa, Tomothy’ego Spalla i Natashę Richardson.

It is June 1816. Trapped indoors by the weather in a rented villa, Lord Byron, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Mary Godwin, Claire Clairmont and Dr John Polidori set each other a challenge: each of them was to write a ghost story. Out of that single night came FRANKENSTEIN and THE VAMPIRE – two texts on which modern horror cinema was built. Ken Russell’s GOTHIC is about that very night.
This is no conventional period drama, though. Russell does not attempt to reconstruct the evening with historical fidelity; instead, he stages it as one long collective bad trip. The group starts by reading German ghost stories; then holds a séance, doses themselves with laudanum, and, one by one, comes face to face with whatever each of them fears most. Over the course of the night, it gets harder to tell if there is really something else in the villa, or if the five Romantics have just called up their demons and don't know how to get them back.
Ken Russell, British cinema’s great eccentric and the director of THE DEVILS and ALTERED STATES, had been circling the subject for a decade. When he finally secured a £2 million budget, he shot the film at a Hertfordshire country house standing in for the Swiss villa and let his imagination run wild: he cut the prologue and epilogue from Stephen Volk’s screenplay and added a mechanical mannequin. He also brought together Gabriel Byrne, Julian Sands, Timothy Spall and Natasha Richardson.
Add a synth-heavy score and the result is something close to the cinematic equivalent of an absinthe hallucination. Critics loathed GOTHIC, but devotees of fearless weirdness have made it a cult film.

Please note! The screening will take place at the swimming pool: all attendees are required to arrive wearing appropriate clothing and bringing a towel.
The film can be watched either ‘from the dry’ – from the poolside – or from air mattresses and seats in the water.
Released in 2005, THE DESCENT was Neil Marshall’s second feature and remains his best-known film. It follows six friends on a caving expedition in the Appalachians, somewhere in North Carolina. For Sarah (Shauna Macdonald), still struggling with the trauma of losing her husband and daughter a year earlier, the trip is meant to be a step back towards normality. Led by Juno (Natalie Mendoza), the women venture into a previously unexplored cave system, where one wrong move can mean losing their bearings – and losing their bearings can mean a fight for survival.
Deep underground, they must confront not only the dangers of the caves themselves, of which there are plenty, but also growing mistrust, old resentments and secrets that begin to strain the bonds between them. The farther they descend into the unknown, the slimmer their chances of escape.
Marshall turns the cave into something resembling hell, or at least purgatory: a space outside the ordinary order of things, where the women are forced to confront their pasts, along with the fears and guilt bound up in them. The ‘descent’ referred to in the title thus signifies both a physical journey deep into the earth and a journey into the darkest recesses of the psyche, where morality seems to be non-existent.
The visual style reinforces this sense of entrapment, with claustrophobic compositions and sparse lighting closing in around the characters. The deeper they go, the more monstrous both the unfamiliar abyss and the people themselves become. In a place like this, is there still room for redemption – or even rebirth?
